Understanding the Role of Community Cards in Poker

As early as World War II, poker games use community cards. Community cards or some may call it "shared cards" or "window cards" are revealed face up to the middle of the table and is split by all of the players. The players in the games that involve community cards have separate cards that are dealt to them privately. These cards are incomplete hands that are merged with the community cards to construct a complete combination or hand.

A set of community cards is known as "board". It may be shown in an easy line or may be organized in a special way. The rules of each match controls how the community cards may be merged in with the player's own hand. The widely known community card game to date is the "Texas hold 'em" poker. In this type of game the community cards each has a name. The first three that are dealt up is called: "The flop", the second one that is dealt up is called: "the turn" and the last one to be dealt up is called "the river".

Community card games do not mash well with low poker games. These are hands that end with a poor hand reward. However, at a high-low split, community card games may be beneficial to the players. Particularly with an ace-to-five low hand can make you win the big pot.

Casinos usually use blinds in dealing with community card games. Blinds are compulsory bets placed by players from the left of the dealer button or buck to limit the bets or to permit players to fold even without placing a bet. There are numerous kinds of limits in poker. One is called a "fixed limit" which is usually used in casinos. Another is a "spread limit" which is usually common in poker games played at home. The less common limits are the "no limit" and the "pot limit" games.

As seen in tournaments worldwide, the later the betting rounds are, the higher the limit of each round. Usually, betting rounds starts with the player left of the dealer but in games with blinds; the first betting round starts with the player next to the big blind.

It is crucial to remember that community card games are usually only about positional matches. In order to win a big pot in poker games, one must really understand and bear in the mind the importance of these cards.
